GUEST POST: Elsie Chapman-author of Dualed!

Hi! I hope you're all having a great Easter! The amazing Elsie Chapman, author of Dualed, agreed to do a guest-post on my blog! Thanks so much, Elsie, for the great guest-post! Dualed was released earlier this year, and I NEED to get my hands on a copy!.....

Behind the Scenes: My writing schedule while writing DUALED

I’m a creature of habit, and my brain seems to work best if I have a regular schedule. For the most part, here was my typical day while I wrote DUALED. It was far, far, far from exciting, but it got the job done!

6:00 am—Morning run on the treadmill.
7:30 am to 8:30 am—Breakfast for everyone. I usually snuck some writing time in here, if I could. But usually it was too chaotic to count on doing much.
8:30 am to 2:00pm—With the house empty, I tried to get as much writing done as possible between these hours. I was pretty good at remembering to eat, and when the words wouldn’t come, or I had a plot snag or hole to work through, I usually went for another run to try to figure it out.
2:00 pm to 11:00 pm—Family time!
11:00 pm to 2:00 am—I always work most efficiently at night, so these few hours were usually pretty productive for me.

Blurb:

Two of you exist. Only one will survive.

The city of Kersh is a safe haven, but the price of safety is high. Everyone has a genetic Alternate—a twin raised by another family—and citizens must prove their worth by eliminating their Alts before their twentieth birthday. Survival means advanced schooling, a good job, marriage—life.

Fifteen-year-old West Grayer has trained as a fighter, preparing for the day when her assignment arrives and she will have one month to hunt down and kill her Alt. But then a tragic misstep shakes West’s confidence. Stricken with grief and guilt, she’s no longer certain that she’s the best version of herself, the version worthy of a future. If she is to have any chance of winning, she must stop running not only from her Alt, but also from love . . . though both have the power to destroy her.

Elsie Chapman's suspenseful YA debut weaves unexpected romance into a novel full of fast-paced action and thought-provoking philosophy. When the story ends, discussions will begin about this future society where every adult is a murderer and every child knows there is another out there who just might be better.

Author Bio:

ELSIE CHAPMAN grew up in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada, before graduating from the University of British Columbia with a BA in English literature. She lives in Vancouver with her husband and two children, where she writes to either movies on a loop or music turned up way too loud (and sometimes both at the same time). Dualed is her first novel.

Thanks, again, Elsie for the brilliant post! I hope you all enjoyed it!

Pages: 272
Publisher: Blazer and Bray
Rated: 5 / 5

Synopsis:

Viv is the love of Camden's life. Viv is the only person who has ever cared for him. Viv makes Camdens life better. Viv is dead.
What if, in another orld, Vivs death never happened?
What if Camden had a choice about letting Viv go, or being with a different version of her forever?

What if finding the love thought you'd lost, meant giving up everything you've ever known? Would it be worth the risk?  With an innovative story-line, a brilliant mixture of characters, romance and so much more; Through To You is the perfect mix of romance, suspense and paranormal twists. Defiantly one of my favourite reads, so far, of 2013!

My Review
Through to You is the perfect combination of thrill, romance and contemporary. With an innovative story-line  and brilliant, in-depth characters, Through to You is Defiantly one of my favourite reads, so far, of 2013.

Cam and Viv are in love; they both make each others lives better, until Viv dies suddenly in a hit and run. Cam is distraught, and closes off all of his friends and family, until he gets the choice between letting Viv go, or being with another version of her.....forever

Firstly, I wanted to talk about the very unique, very romantic story-line. That, added with the paranormal twist added an edge to the book-which enabled the story to develop further. I just got so stuck into this book, I just couldn't tear my eyes from the pages! This was a really interesting read, and nothing that I expected! When I read the synopsis, I didn't anticipate what an emotional, raw story I was in for! It was more than just an average ghost story. At the beginning of the book, the pace was quite slow because of Cams distraught attitude-which was, however, understandable. Luckily, from then on, the pace picked up dramatically and I completely devoured Through To You!

The characters....wow! That is what really made this book for me. There was such a wide variety of characters. Its hard to talk about them because of the "two worlds" (which means, in some cases, two of the same characters!) Firstly; Cam, the main character. When I first started this book, Cam was introduced as extremely distraught and extremely upset, which was defiantly understandable considering his situation. But in the first 30 pages, his attitude hadn't changed at all and I felt like the story really needed to progress, luckily, as the story developed, so did Cam. *SPOILER AHEAD!* When Cam meets the other Viv, his attitude changes completely. You get to see a more happier side of him, but he continues to block out his friends and family. However, when I got to know the other Viv, I quickly became suspicious of her.I find her really needy and she just seemed like quite a strange character that I really didn't warm to. *SPOILER OVER!* One of my favourite character's had to be Mike. I really admired how, despite how Cam treated him, he still stuck with him and unlike all of the Cams old friends. He wasn't a very major character, but I would have loved to see more of him in this book. I loved and admired his loyal and likable attitude. Moving onto "the real" Viv, Cam's initial love interest. She was portrayed as such an energetic and strong character and I wish that  I could have gotten to know her as she seems like such a brilliant character. Nina was quite a major character, but for some reason, I didn't connect to her like I thought I would. I did admire her because of how caring she was of, her brother, Own (who was a really sweet character) but she just didn't really stand out for me as a character.

I loved the concept of this book; it was such a unique, unusual way to tell a love story. Before I read this book, I read reviews and I thought that I would get confused with the two different worlds concept, but when the prospect was introduced, I wasn't confused at all; it was what made the book stand out for me.

Towards the end, so many things happened-but it still didn't seem too much. At the end, I loved how everything wrapped together-with Viv, Nina and his family and friends in all different ways. One ofthe main aspects in Through To You, I think, was the relationships. Cam had individual, very different relationships with his family and friends and even teachers and loved how they were explored throughout the book.

I loved the concept of this book; it was such a unique, unusual way to tell a love story and I enjoyed each and every page;  This defiantly wasn't a light love story; it was full of emotion, depth and characters that spoke to me from the page.

Overall, I would summarise Through To You as a very provocative, very powerful read that. With a mixture of paranormal, romance and thrill; saying this book was addictive is an understatement!

Top 5 Books on my wishlist!

Hi! I hope you're all having a great week! Its now the time of the month where I'm getting excited for Christmas!! I have about two billion books on my Christmas wishlist, but here are the 5 books on the top of my wishlist!....

The Unquiet by Jeanine Garsee-

Sixteen-year-old Rinn Jacobs has secrets: One, she’s bipolar. Two, she killed her grandmother.

After a suicide attempt, and now her parents' separation, Rinn and her mom move from California to the rural Ohio town where her mother grew up. Back on her medications and hoping to stay well, Rinn settles into her new home, undaunted by the fact that the previous owner hanged herself in Rinn's bedroom. At school, her classmates believe the school pool is haunted by Annaliese, a girl who drowned there. But when a reckless séance goes awry, and terrible things start happening to her new friends—yet not to her—Rinn is determined to find out why she can’t be "touched" by Annaliese...or if Annaliese even exists.

With the help of Nate Brenner, the hunky “farmer boy” she’s rapidly falling for, Rinn devises a dangerous plan to uncover the truth. Soon reality and fantasy meld into one, till Rinn finds it nearly impossible to tell the difference. When a malevolent force threatens the lives of everyone she cares about--not to mention her own--she can't help wondering: who should she really be afraid of?

Annaliese? Or herself?

This book came out a few months ago, but it has been on my wishlist from the moment I heard about it! This book looks amazing! Everybody who I know who has read it, has loved it!

My Life Undecided by Jessica Brody-

PLEASE READ THIS! MY LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!

Okay, maybe that was a bit melodramatic, but I’m sorry, I’m feeling a bit melodramatic at the moment.

Here’s the deal. My name is Brooklyn Pierce, I’m fifteen years old, and I am decisionally challenged. Seriously, I can’t remember the last good decision I made. I can remember plenty of crappy ones though. Including that party I threw when my parents were out of town that accidentally burned down a model home. Yeah, not my finest moment, for sure.

But see, that’s why I started a blog. To enlist readers to make my decisions for me. That’s right. I gave up. Threw in the towel. I let someone else decide which book I read for English. And whether or not I accepted an invitation to join the debate team from that cute-in-a-dorky-sort-of-way guy who gave me the Heimlich maneuver in the cafeteria. (Note to self: chew the melon before swallowing it.) I even let them decide who I dated!

Well, it turns out there are some things in life you simply can’t choose or have chosen for you—like who you fall in love with. And now everything’s more screwed up than ever.

But don’t take my word for it. Read the book and decide for yourself. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll scream in frustration. Or maybe that’s just me. After all, it’s my life.

This. Book. Sounds. Amazing..
I'v never heard of a book anything like this! This book has been on my wishlist for ages, because it sounds so unique and funny! The book trailer is also brilliant, and was what initially drew me in! I really hope to read this book this December!

The Host by Stephenie Meyer-

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, The Host is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

........... I can't believe I haven't read this book yet! I've recently gotten into vampire based books, and I really want to read this one!

Origin by Jessica Khoury-
Pia has grown up in a secret laboratory hidden deep in the Amazon rain forest. She was raised by a team of scientists who have created her to be the start of a new immortal race. But on the night of her seventeenth birthday, Pia discovers a hole in the electric fence that surrounds her sterile home--and sneaks outside the compound for the first time in her life.

Free in the jungle, Pia meets Eio, a boy from a nearby village. Together, they embark on a race against time to discover the truth about Pia's origin--a truth with deadly consequences that will change their lives forever.

Origin is a beautifully told, shocking new way to look at an age-old desire: to live forever, no matter the cost.

WOW. I've never, ever come across a book like this! It sounds AWESOME and the cover is amazing! Origin is Jessica's debut novel, and I can't wait to read it! I've also just watched the trailer, which is absolutely brilliant!

Birth Marked by Caragh O'Brien-

In the future, in a world baked dry by the harsh sun, there are those who live inside the walled Enclave and those, like sixteen-year-old Gaia Stone, who live outside. Following in her mother’s footsteps Gaia has become a midwife, delivering babies in the world outside the wall and handing a quota over to be "advanced" into the privileged society of the Enclave. Gaia has always believed this is her duty, until the night her mother and father are arrested by the very people they so loyally serve.

Now Gaia is forced to question everything she has been taught, but her choice is simple: enter the world of the Enclave to rescue her parents, or die trying.

A stunning adventure brought to life by a memorable heroine, this dystopian debut will have readers racing all the way to the dramatic finish.

I LOVE dystopian books, and after my friend having read this a few weeks ago (and loving it!) I immedietly added it to my wishlist!

Waiting on Wednesday #2!

Hi! I hope you're all having a great week! :) I am so sorry for not posting yesterday! Unfortunately, this week was the week I got a really bad cold/flu, and so had to stay off school yesterday. :( I am so sorry! I will be doing an extra post on the Friday. :) Here is my second post on Waiting on Wednesday! :)

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It is were each week I show you an upcoming release that I am eagerly anticipating.

Blood Kissed Sky by J.A London

There's nowhere left to hide.

I thought vampires were our enemies - they controlled our lives, isolated our cities, and demanded our blood - until I met Victor. With Victor taking over as the new Lord Valentine, things were supposed to get better. Instead, they're worse than ever.

Day Walkers, a new breed of vampires who can walk in the sun, are terrorizing the city. Blood supplies are low, and if Victor's vampires don't get enough, they will become infected with the Thirst - a disease that will turn them into mindless killers.

To stop it, I must journey across the desolate wasteland to the very place where the sickness began. I can only hope that the answers that await me are enough to save us all . . . before it's too late

I haven't read the first book in this series, but I really want to read both of these amazing books! They sound fantastic, and have had loads of positive reviews! Recently I have gotten into vampire/horror books, and so would really love to get into this series! Blood Kissed Sky is released December 26th 2012.

I also absolutely LOVE cover! I think its so unique and eye-catching!

Which books are YOU looking forward to the release of this month?

I hope you're all having a great week!

REVIEW: Choker by Elizabeth Miles

Published: January 4th 2011
Pages: 233
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
Rated: 5/5

My Review
I don't usually read books in the horror genre, but Choker has defiantly made me want to read more!
The story-line was unique and haunting, and I honestly couldn't read this book at night! It was full of twists and turns and the relationship between Zoe and Cara was so intense and in-depth, it was scary!

Cara and Zoe were best-friends until Cara moves away. When Zoe tuns up at Cara's house unexpectedly, Cara couldn't be happier. With a new look and personality, as Cara comes out from her shell with a new found confidence, she finally gets the attention of the guy she's been into for months. But at the same time, one girl is found dead, and the other missing. Everybody is suspicious, but Cara knows something is not quite right, At all. What happens when your best-friend turns into a stranger?

Choker was just...brilliant. None of the characters were unrealistic, and the story-line was unnerving, yet still enjoyable to read.

The characters were all really believable and almost all of them added a unique element to the story which also added even more to the overall  plot development. For example, the main pulse of the story was the friendship between Zoe and Cara, that was written amazingly, and really captured how intense things would actually be in reality. However, Ethan, the love interest in Choker, added even more depth to the plot. I  also like that there was just one love interest, as I think a love triangle would have been way to much and would have taken something away from the brilliant mystery regarding the two missing girls. As the overall book was just so chilling and scary, I think the romance between Cara and Ethan added a brilliant element to the story,  also adding to the plot development as Ethan did become entwined with the mystery, and I love how those two aspects were tied together.

My favourite element to the story, though, had to be the relationship between Zoe and Cara. It was amazing how the author could create such an intense, deep relationship that evoked so many emotions in me. I loved Cara was a character, and felt really sorry for her. From the minute Zoe was introduced into the story, I wasn't sure on her as a character. I could feel how suffocated Cara felt because of her.

I only have one teeny-weeny, tiny bit of criticism. When Zoe turned up at Cara's house, she said to Cara "I've done something terrible" and even though Cara did think in her head "what has she done that was so terrible?" she barely questioned Zoe about what she had done. It did really make me want to find out what she done, but I found a bit unrealistic that Cara barely asked what Zoe had done.

Other than that, though, I absolutly adored Choker. The chilling, in-depth plot had me captivated from the first sentence, and I absolutely loved all of the characters. This was honestly one of the most genuinly scary books I've read! I completely reccomend Choker, and it is one of my favourite books of the year so far, however....warning: don't read it late at night!

Overall Choker was an intense and astounding book, that had me so emotionally involved with all of the characters; I was crying (for sadness and happiness!) at least five times whilst reading this book. I can't reccomend Choker enough!
